The Photos

Here’s the deal with the photos. The sidebar would pull in the latest 6 from Flickr that had the tag ‘rpheath’. The portfolio would pull in the latest 30 that had the tag ‘portfolio’.

Notice the little login box in the upper right-hand corner. If I was logged in, there would be a “Refresh Cache” link up there. Clicking that would go out to Flickr (and del.icio.us) and grab the latest as specified in my API library, and cache them. Then the site itself would read from the cached version, which would decouple my site from Flickr and del.icio.us, increasing load times and efficiency.

This was the first implementation of a 3-column layout on my personal site. The left and right columns were a static width, while the center column was fluid. Regretfully, I should have had a max-width set on an outer wrapper, because a wide screen monitor looked awful. Oh well.

I removed the admin section entirely with this version. All of the admin functions were inline with the use of ajax. Upon logging in, a menu would appear. If you were in the portfolio section, the appropriate menu(s) would appear; if you were in the posts section, the appropriate menu(s) would appear; and so on. I later realized that having the admin functionality that way felt a little sloppy, but for this version, that’s how it was.

I kept this version for a while, and was pretty happy with it. I later revised it a bit, but it was based off of this design.
