Redesigning the Redesign

For better or for worse, I chose to redesign the “all white” view not long after I had finished it. And I went back to the latest post snippet rather than the full article. I think this site was much better than the prior version, but it eventually grew old as well.

I was beginning to learn a lot more about Rails, and the thought of some of the back-end coding I had written was repulsive. It was to the point where refactoring wasn’t really worth my time, and I could probably just re-write it faster. Eventually, that’s what I did.

I think this site, albeit not the greatest design, did at least provide some separation between the posts and metadata about the site. Oh, and this version implemented caching of the API stuff, so it loaded about 20x faster I’d say (yeah, literally).

So I started off at rpheath.com with a PHP site. Then came across Rails and built simplebeta.com. Then realized that was dumb, and went back to rpheath.com using Rails and never looked back since.

Well, this was my big move back to rpheath.com. I was wrapped up in a pattern that resulted in me never liking any of my sites longer than a few weeks, so I’d redesign them (actually, start fresh each time, new code, new DB, etc). This implementation sort of put that pattern to rest.

I started off with the white design. It was ok, but I eventually thought (or realized?) that all of the data sort of meshed as one gigantic conglomerate. That wasn’t exactly what I wanted, as the main focus of the site was for the posts pretty much. So I changed it over to the second design (with the dark section at the bottom), which lasted for a much longer period of time.

Of course, I eventually got tired of it, too (and in hindsight, I don’t really like either one at all now).
