Asking a Question

One feature that was required of this LMS was to provide an easy way for the learner to ask a question to his/her instructor while taking a course. The solution is shown above.

Clicking the “Ask Instructor a Question” will drop down a form with the screen number and learning object (section/chapter) already filled in on the subject line. The learner types in his/her question, and clicks “Ask Question”. Using Ajax, KnowledgeMine will submit the question and send an email to the instructor, providing the subject, question, who it was from, and a link to reply to this learners question.

It’s nothing sophisticated, but worthy of mention.

KnowledgeMine is a Learning Management System that allows coal miners to take online training. It’s very minimal and basic, but does what you might come to expect from a LMS: tracking.

The interface had to be as straight-forward as possible, since not all of the KnowledgeMine users are computer savvy.

One interesting piece to this application is how courses/content get “loaded” into KnowledgeMine. Honestly, that part wasn’t straight-forward.

KnowledgeMine plays the content, but it doesn’t create the content. It had to interface with an already-built content publishing tool, which published content as HTML according to a common format. So, what I’ve done is provide an admin interface that reads the published directories, and allows an admin to choose a course to load. Then KnowledgeMine will convert the appropriate pages to partials, load them into it’s content folders, and parse the course outline and stick it in the database (mainly for navigation and tracking). It works quite well for such a rather large design constraint.

This application was built using Ruby on Rails.
