Learner Status

This is a quick-view of learner status for a particular company (I’ve wiped out the logo and blurred the emails intentionally). It shows how many courses each person has left.

One thing to note about this application in relation to users is there’s a centralized user management system that holds all user information. KnowledgeMine uses web services to handle the user-related stuff.

Also, I built an external assessment tool that KnowledgeMine uses to give assessments for certain courses/sections.

These external utilities were built this way because they aren’t exclusive to KnowledgeMine, but they solve the same problems. Rather than duplicate all of that, each sub-component was kept separate.

KnowledgeMine is a Learning Management System that allows coal miners to take online training. It’s very minimal and basic, but does what you might come to expect from a LMS: tracking.

The interface had to be as straight-forward as possible, since not all of the KnowledgeMine users are computer savvy.

One interesting piece to this application is how courses/content get “loaded” into KnowledgeMine. Honestly, that part wasn’t straight-forward.

KnowledgeMine plays the content, but it doesn’t create the content. It had to interface with an already-built content publishing tool, which published content as HTML according to a common format. So, what I’ve done is provide an admin interface that reads the published directories, and allows an admin to choose a course to load. Then KnowledgeMine will convert the appropriate pages to partials, load them into it’s content folders, and parse the course outline and stick it in the database (mainly for navigation and tracking). It works quite well for such a rather large design constraint.

This application was built using Ruby on Rails.
