Upon logging in, the “learner” will see this screen. The right hand side provides a listing of their status for completed courses (unfortunately, I don’t happen to have any to show).

The left-hand side shows in progress courses and courses that haven’t been started yet. Once a course has been completed, it will move out of the left and into the right.

Clicking on a course shows the course details; clicking launch will, you guessed it, launch the course; and clicking on stats will show which “chapters” (or sections) are complete for that course, along with the corresponding scores.

At the bottom is recently added supplemental uploads that applies to all courses. Clicking a course will let you see the supplemental uploads for that course alone.

KnowledgeMine is a Learning Management System that allows coal miners to take online training. It’s very minimal and basic, but does what you might come to expect from a LMS: tracking.

The interface had to be as straight-forward as possible, since not all of the KnowledgeMine users are computer savvy.

One interesting piece to this application is how courses/content get “loaded” into KnowledgeMine. Honestly, that part wasn’t straight-forward.

KnowledgeMine plays the content, but it doesn’t create the content. It had to interface with an already-built content publishing tool, which published content as HTML according to a common format. So, what I’ve done is provide an admin interface that reads the published directories, and allows an admin to choose a course to load. Then KnowledgeMine will convert the appropriate pages to partials, load them into it’s content folders, and parse the course outline and stick it in the database (mainly for navigation and tracking). It works quite well for such a rather large design constraint.

This application was built using Ruby on Rails.
